What Are The Benefits Of Using An LED Grow Light?

From increased energy efficiency to healthier plants, LED is the way to go when it comes to grow lights. This is why the best LED grow light in Canada is always going to feature an LED light panel. Here are just a few of the reasons you should use an LED grow light:

Energy Efficiency

Older models of grow lights that do not use LED light panels use up a lot of energy which can cause your electric bill to skyrocket. LEDs are highly efficient and because they use less electricity, they also do not overheat as easily and raise the temperature in your grow tent.

So, this also means less power used in cooling your grow tent. Overall, you are going to get a better yield from your crops and use just a fraction of the power to do it!

Faster Harvest

Outdoors, your plants are subject to whatever light conditions are available at that time of year. If its winter or you live further north than your plants are used to, it might not even be possible to give them enough natural sunlight to grow.

With grow lights, you can customize the environment to provide optimal light conditions. And you can customize it to the different stages of the plant’s growing cycle.

Plants need certain waves of light when the seeds are just germinating and starting to sprout and another set of light waves when they are older and beginning to flower or fruit. The number of hours of light they need each day also changes as they grow. With grow lights, you can adapt the light to meet their exact needs.

Doing this speeds up the growing cycle and gets your plant from seedling to harvest faster than you would if you were growing outdoors.

Healthier Plants

LED grow lights are designed specifically for plants. Unlike other lights and even older models of grow lights, LED grow lights focus on the light waves your plants need and avoid the ones they do not need. This results in a lower risk of burning or drying out your plants from overexposure to harsh lights.

That means leaves, flowers, and fruits will all be healthier and stronger. It also means you will not have to use as much water to keep them hydrated since they are not getting dried out by the light. So that is yet another way you are making the grow process more efficient with LED grow lights!

2. MARS HYDRO LED Grow Light with Reflector Hood

TS 1000W LED Grow Light MARS HYDRO Reflector Sunlike Spectrum Grow Lights for Indoor Plants 3x3ft Grow Veg and Bloom Dimmable IR Plant Growing Lamps Silent Fanless Design 342pcs LEDs

For the grower who is all about light quality and distribution, the LED grow light from MARS HYDRO should be at the top of your list. There primary focus is on high quality and lasting design with an attention to detail that you just will not find in a lot of other brands.

One of the features you will love about this grow light is the reflector hood. With a standard LED panel, you just get a lot of light beating down on the tops of your plants but little later lighting around the sides.

MARS HYDRO’s signature reflector hood diffuses and casts that full spectrum light all around your plants so that the leaves underneath the top layer are getting just as much light. • Unique reflector hood that increases lateral lighting by 20%
  • Easy plug and play set up requires no assembly or complicated wiring
  • Includes red LEDS which help increase fruit and blossom yields on your plants
  • No fan makes this silent but also puts it at risk of overheating if your space is not otherwise well ventilated or temperature controlled

Most of all, the dual switches allow you to adjust the type of light you are giving to your plants based on whether they are in the vegetable or bloom stages. So, you actually have three lighting options. The vegetable setting for germinating seeds and sprouting young plants, the bloom setting for the middle stage of growth, and the combination full spectrum setting for late-stage growing to help those fruits or flowers come into full ripeness or bloom.

Another great feature on this grow light is the cooling fan. It not only keeps the light itself from overheating but also provides some circulation to the air in your indoor grow space. Another great feature to love on this grow light is the dimmer function. Most LED panels offer switches that let you toggle between a couple different pre-programmed settings. What Should You Look For In A Grow Light?

What Should You Look For In A Grow Light?

There are a lot of stats and specs that you will see as you shop for the best LED grow light in Canada. Do not feel bad if it gets a little confusing. How does a light “use 100 watts” but “cast 1000 watts?” What is PAR? What is the difference between core coverage and maximum coverage? In this section, we will breakdown what all that technical jargon really means.

Coverage Area

As you shop for grow lights, you are going to see two terms pop up often. Those are “core coverage” and “maximum coverage” area. You should be most concerned with core coverage. This is the ideal coverage range.

Within the core coverage area, every plant will be evenly and fully exposed to the ideal amount of light. Beyond that core area, as you move further and further to the maximum coverage area, that light exposure gets a bit weaker. Those plants will still get light, but it will be a little less optimal.

Use the maximum coverage number mainly for designing your expanded grow space design. That is, when placing two or more lights over your plants, you can space them so that their maximum coverage areas overlap. In that way, the plants in those “border” areas are getting light cast from two lights. That helps to compensate for the decreased coverage coming from each light.

For example, say you have two grow lights with a core coverage area of 2’ by 2’ and a maximum coverage area of 4’ by 4’. You would hang these lamps 2’ apart so that plants falling in that 2’ of space outside the core coverage area of either lamp are getting two streams of weaker light which should add up to full coverage.

Light Spectrum

There is a huge spectrum of light waves that exist, from red to blue and stretching further in both directions to waves our eyes cannot even see. Plants use different waves for different things. Light waves closer to the red end of the spectrum, for example, are most important for seedlings and young plants who use this to grow and take root.

As a plant gets older, it starts to rely more on light waves closer to the blue end of the spectrum.

For a grow light to be most useful, it should have a wide range of spectrums. If it does not offer a switch to toggle between red and blue spectrums, it should at least offer “full-spectrum” bulbs. However, if you get one that can switch, you can customize the lighting to best suit the stage of life your plants are in.

PAR stands for Photosynthetically Active Radiation. Basically, this is the amount of light your LED panel is giving that actually contributes to the photosynthesis process. Photosynthesis, for those who do not know, is the process by which plants absorb light and use it to grow.

Not every type of light causes photosynthesis. This is why an indoor plant that is not close enough to a window will die even though your living room lamp is on. The type of light your house lamps are giving off is not the type that causes photosynthesis.

So, the PAR value of a grow light is essential. The higher the PAR, the more beneficial light the plants are getting. This value is actually more important than the watts of the bulb.

You are going to see two main categories when it comes to reflectivity. Namely, simple LED light panels with no reflectivity features built into it or LED light panels with a reflector hood.

If you are growing in a tent, the tent will usually come with a reflective lining that helps to distribute the light and ensure that the undergrowth and sides are getting just as much light as the top. However, you are growing in an indoor space with no tent, you should consider a grow light that comes with a reflective hood.

The reflective hood helps do some of the distribution of light that a reflective grow tent would be doing. Aside from choosing between hood and no hood, you also want to look at the surface area. A thin and wide panel will spread light more effectively than a thick but compact one.

None of these are inherently good or bad. You really need to consider the space your growing in. If you are growing in a tent, for example, paying the extra price for a grow light with a hood does not make a lot of sense. On the other hand, if you are growing in a garage with no tent, a simple panel might not be enough.

Cooling System

If your grow light will be running for 15 hours a day or more, a cooling system is going to be essential. The most common cooling system is to just build a fan into the light panel itself. However, some newer innovative designs seek to provide no noise cooling by designing extra thin panels that do not build up heat as much as the thicker panels.

If your grow light is going to be inside a grow tent which will not circulate air as well as an open indoor space, a cooling system is an especially important feature to consider. If there is no built-in fan, you still need to account for how you are going to prevent overheating.

Making sense of all the technical specifications and features as you shop for the best LED grow light in Canada can feel overwhelming. After reading through this guide, you should have a better idea of what you are looking at and what all of it means. The next step is to make a checklist of everything your perfect grow light should include. What PAR value does it have? How big is it? What extra features does it have? Once you have that checklist, shopping through all the different options will be a breeze!
