How To Choose The Best Men’s Winter Jacket

It is definitely worth putting the time and effort into making the right choice when it comes to choosing your next winter jacket. Your winter jacket needs to do more than keep you warm. It also needs to keep out wind, rain, snow, and other elements that you deal with each winter. Keep reading to learn what you need to think about when shopping for the best men’s winter jacket.

Weight And Compressibility

If you do not travel as much, this may not be a top priority for you. However, it is still a factor you need to consider regardless. Weight and compressibility contribute to how comfortable your new winter jacket is to carry around with you.

Even if you are just going from home to work or a restaurant, having a big, bulky jacket hanging from the back of your chair can be cumbersome.
If you are travelling, this is even more important. A single winter jacket could take up half of the room in your suitcase! Something lighter and more compressible will allow you to actually pack everything you need in one suitcase.

When choosing the size of your new winter jacket, you need to consider how much bulk will be under it. If you plan to wear thick sweaters or suit jackets or other bulkier layers, you may need to size up in order to ensure your winter jacket is roomy enough for both you and any extra layers.

Temperature Rating

Temperature ratings can be a useful way to get a quick read on how insulated or thick a jacket will be. The colder the temperature rating, the more likely the jacket is to have important features like weatherproofing and quality closures.

What To Look For In A Men’s Winter Jacket

What To Look For In A Men’s Winter Jacket

When choosing the best men’s winter jacket in Canada, there are a surprising number of features that you need to consider. Every feature of this jacket will contribute to how warm or breathable it is. So, you need to think about what climate you live in and the best way to balance out the breathability and insulative qualities of your jacket to provide the right level of warmth without making you uncomfortable.

Outer Material

The outer material of your jacket will have little to do with its warmth. It does not need to be a thick or insulative material. In fact, some breathability here might be preferable to allow a little airflow. The most important features you will be considering in the outer material of the jacket are its wind and water resistance.

A water-resistant jacket will stay dry in light snow or a mild, short-term drizzle. A waterproof jacket can keep you dry in torrential rains or all-day snowstorms. The same difference applies to a wind-resistant jacket and a windbreaker.  Wind resistant means that it will block the full force of mild winds from chilling you to the core. A windbreaker, on the other hand, is designed to stop winds in their tracks and block them from penetrating the inner layers of your jacket.

When it comes to insulation, you need to think about how much insulation you need as well as what kind. How much you need depends on the purpose of the jacket, as you read earlier in this guide.

Down is made of feathers, usually from a goose or duck. The fluffy clusters of feathers offer a great balance of heat-trapping and breathability. That is, air can filter in but the heat around your body has a difficult time getting out. This helps you stay warm without breaking a sweat, something you really don’t want to do in an extremely cold climate.

Down-filled jackets are usually given a fill rating somewhere between 500 and 900. The higher that rating, the denser the fill which means a warmer jacket. The main benefits of down filling include:

  • Very lightweight
  • Super compressible so that it can be packed away when winter is over or packed into a suitcase without taking up too much room
  • Long life span when cared for properly

However, when wearing a down-filled jacket, you have to be careful to keep that down filling dry. When it gets wet, it loses its insulative properties. Those loose, fluffy clumps become soggy balls inside your jacket. This means they can no longer trap heat inside the jacket. Not to mention, the wet down will freeze in cold enough temperatures, turning a cozy jacket into an ice pack.  To prevent this from happening, you generally want to make sure the outer material of your down-filled jacket is fully waterproof so that you can stay warm, no matter what the weather is like.

Synthetic fill is usually made of polyester. The polyester fibres are shredded and made to mimic the fluffy clumps that natural down fill has. However, unlike down, the synthetic fill can still trap your body heat, even when it gets wet. It also dries a lot more quickly. Because of this, it is a lot easier to take care of and can be a better choice in extremely wet climates.

Where down-filled jackets get a rating between 500 to 900, synthetic fill is measured in grams per square meter. The higher the number of grams, the denser the fill. Denser fill translates to a warmer jacket.
The key advantages of a synthetic-filled jacket are:

  • Better water resistance
  • Better functionality when wet
  • Machine washable
  • Often more affordable than down when comparing jackets of similar fill densities

The tradeoff for this convenience and water resistance is that synthetic insulation is not nearly as lightweight as down. Your synthetic-filled jacket is going to be a lot heavier and a lot bulkier than your down jacket. It also will not compress as much, meaning it takes up more room in your closet or suitcase.  Another tradeoff is lifespan. Synthetic fibres will degrade and the jacket will generally not be as durable as a down jacket.

The right length depends as much on climate as any of the other features of your jacket. If waterproofing or wind resistance are a top priority for you, so will a longer jacket. The extra length will ensure that even if some wind manages to sneak in at the bottom of your coat, it will only hit your legs, which are already protected by your pants.  A jacket that stops at your waist, even if it is made of the best windbreaker material, may not be able to stop winds from getting underneath the jacket and through the layers you have on underneath.

The lining of your jacket is the inner material that comes in direct contact with your body. Because of this, you should be more concerned about its ability to retain heat more than any waterproofing or wind-proofing qualities.  However, you also, ideally, want a lining that is breathable. It should whisk that heat away from your body and trap it in the fibres of your jacket. This prevents you from sweating inside your jacket. If you know you tend to break a sweat in heavy winter coats, look for something with moisture-wicking capabilities.

Pocket Features

They can be easy to forget but you do need to consider the types of pockets available on your winter jacket. Remember, you will likely be wearing thick gloves that can make undoing buttons or pulling at small zippers tedious or even impossible.  You also probably want somewhere to store your thick winter hat and gloves when you go inside. You might also need a pocket that you know is waterproof and fully sealed so that you can keep your phone and other valuables safe.

So look for jackets with large, drop-in pockets you can easily slide gloves and beanies in and out of. Then, look for an interior security pocket on the inside of your jacket. This will usually be near the seam and will zip or button closed. This will keep your phone and wallet safe from rain and snow as well as from falling out of open pockets.  Finally, make sure other pockets feature zippers with large tabs that are easy to pull, even with thick gloves on. Alternatively, consider pockets with snap closures that are easy to maneuver with gloved hands.

The outer materials and insulation are definitely the most important factors to consider when shopping for the best men’s winter jacket in Canada. You want something that is suited to the climate you are in. That goes just as much for warmer winters as for frigid northern winters. A heavy, bulky winter coat can be overkill in a warmer climate, causing you to sweat, which can make you even colder if you remove your jacket. But if you are in a cold climate, a lightweight winter jacket just will not get the job done. So make material and insulation your top priority. Then, choose your preferences when it comes to other features like closures, hoods, and style.
