Novosbed Vs Casper Mattress Canada 2021 – Comparison Review

Novosbed Vs Casper Mattress Canada

Both Casper and Novosbed are established brands in the online bed in a box industry. Though both are all-foam mattresses, several feature differences give them each a unique overall feel. One offers more of a bounce on the surface, while the other has a softer feel that will make you feel more as if you are asleep “in, not on” the mattress. If you are on the hunt for a new mattress, and you are stuck between the Novosbed vs Casper in Canada, this review will cover everything worth considering before your purchase.

30-Second Review: The Novosbed has been offering mattresses online since 2009 and has produced a number of mattresses, with The Novosbed being one of its forerunners. You can buy the Novosbed in three different firmness ratings: soft, medium and firm. What is unique about Novosbed is that the company offers firmness choices that guarantee a perfect firmness fit – if you think the mattress is too soft or too firm, Novosbed will provide you with a firmness adjuster free-of-charge. In this review, we will focus on Novosbed’s popular firmness option, the medium. Novosbed comes with a 15-year warranty and a 120-night sleep trial, a slightly more impressive offering than the typical 10-year warranty and 100-night sleep trial of other mattress providers.

30-Second Review: The Casper Original

Casper started in 2014 with The Casper Original, offering a single mattress in one firmness rating with a “universal feel.” Originally based in the US, Casper is now available in countries around the world, including Canada. Being one of the first bed in a box manufacturers, Casper used creative marketing techniques that saw the brand quickly become one of the leading mattress companies in the world. This review will focus on The Casper Original, which currently has a 100-night trial and a 10-year warranty.

The bed in a box concept involves ordering a mattress online and waiting for it to be delivered to your home. You will generally find that delivery by online mattress sellers is convenient and speedy, quicker than you would expect for delivery from a physical mattress store. Both Novosbed and Casper offer fast, secure delivery directly to your front door.

The Novosbed is currently available in both the United States and Canada. You may need to pay for shipping to some more remote locations in either country. Novosbed will ship your mattress between 2 and 6 days, depending on your location. It is common for an order to take between 1 and 10 business days from start to finish for processing.

Casper’s original mattress is shipped to destinations around the world, including locations all over Canada. Processing and shipping take between 3 and 5 days from the point of purchase. All of Casper’s mattresses are shipped in an easy-handle box with an information slip regarding your mattress of choice. Casper’s mattress pick-up service is also known for being particularly prompt, which is useful to know if you decide the mattress isn’t for you.

Unboxing And Setup

When you buy a mattress online, it comes air-sealed in a tight rug shape, packed into plastic wrapping, and shipped in a rectangular box. This makes it much easier for delivery, and air-packing a memory foam mattress won’t affect its shape or quality.

The Novosbed is shipped rolled up inside a rectangular box, and unboxing the mattress is simple. After placing the Novosbed on your desired bed frame or a flat surface, simply open one end of the box and tip it to slide the compressed mattress out. When the mattress is lying flat, carefully cut away the outer plastic, unroll the mattress and cut the remaining plastic. The majority of the mattress’ decompression typically takes around 5 minutes, but you may need to wait up to 48 hours for it to expand fully.

The Casper, too, arrives in a sturdy cardboard box that is a little more attractive than the Novosbed’s, detailed with Casper’s familiar blue and white stripe design and four easy-carry handle slots at either end. Follow the same process to remove the mattress from the box – open the top of the box and slide it onto a flat surface.
Once the wrapping is removed, the mattress will inflate immediately and be ready to sleep within minutes. Casper instructs that you may need to wait up to 24 hours for the mattress to expand fully.

Mattress Construction

Mattress Construction

Cover Material

Cover Material

The Novosbed’s cover layer is made from soft and breathable plant fibres called Tencel. Tencel is more resistant to stains than cotton, making it ideal for protecting the mattress. When you want to wash the cover, you can unzip it from the mattress reasonably easily.

Casper’s mattress is made from a knit polyester fabric blend. This fabric has the same purpose as Novosbed’s Tencel, offering a soft, stretchy comfort layer that makes the mattress feel plush and pillowy to touch.

Top Layer

Novosbed: Next-generation memory foam layer

Novosbed’s medium-firm mattress offering has a top layer of high-density gel-infused memory foam. With this material being fairly dense, it is designed to last night after night of being slept on. You will also benefit from the material’s responsive cooling, in particular, if you are a hot sleeper. The memory foam layer works exactly as you would expect it to, conforming to the body and giving a feel of medium softness.

Casper: Airscape™ perforated breathable foam layer

Casper’s aerated foam top layer has a slow response to pressure, making it ideal for use as the mattress’ softest, contouring layer. This top layer allows the sleeper to gradually sink their sleeping position, preventing a build-up of pressure at the hips and shoulders. Similarly to the Novosbed, this layer has an aerated surface, which allows for more airflow than typical memory foam and discourages the build-up of heat.

Middle Layer

Novosbed: Transitional memory foam

The Novosbed’s second layer is made from premium airflow foam. This layer is still breathable but slightly firmer than the top layer, preventing the sleeper from sinking too far into the mattress. Using a similar design as the Novosbed’s top layer, the second layer helps dissipate heat and prevent odour build-up.

Casper: Memory foam zoned support layer

The middle foam layer of the Casper is made from memory foam. This layer is incredibly unique to Casper, as it is sectioned into three different zones: a zone at the top end of the mattress for the shoulder and neck area, a zone designed for the hip area, and a zone to support the lower legs and feet. The shoulder area features slightly softer foam, which prevents a build-up of pressure that could lead to neck and shoulder pain. The foam at the lower leg area is also fairly soft, while the hip area is slightly firmer, offering more of a lift at the mid-section and promoting good spinal alignment.

Bottom Layer

Novosbed: Premium support foam base layer

At the base of the Novosbed is a thick layer of premium support foam. This layer is dense and durable, helping to distribute body weight and eliminate motion transfer. Being thick and durable, the support foam is designed to help the mattress maintain its structural integrity over its years of use.

Casper: Durable Base Layer

Similarly, Casper uses high-density polyfoam in a thick layer as its bottom base. This layer ensures the mattress maintains its shape, especially when somebody goes into bed and lies down. The base layer is also useful for preventing motion transfer, reducing shaking when a sleeper rolls over or changes positions.

Firmness And Feel

The Novosbed comes in soft (4), medium (5) and firm (7) ratings, but because each mattress has a similar construction, you will find that they all offer similar pressure-relieving capabilities. The Novosbed’s medium-firm mattress has a slightly firmer top layer, which is better for sleepers who lie on their sides or midweight to heavier sleepers. Plus, don’t forget about the Comfort+ adjustment kit! This is essentially just a foam mattress topper, which allows you to make your mattress firmer or softer if you still want to adjust the firmness according to your preference.

The Casper feels slightly firmer at a 6.5 rating compared to the Novosbed because of its zoned support layer. Casper is considered a very supportive mattress, offering the right balance of sink and bounce. Its soft memory foam top layer cradles the body, while the zoned support lifts the hips and prevents sleepers from sinking too deeply into the mattress. If you sleep on your front or back, the Casper will offer the support you need.

Edge Support

Edge Support

Edge support is slightly more difficult for all-foam mattresses to exceed, as they typically don’t have as much structure as a mattress containing springs. A mattress with good edge support allows sleepers to lie comfortably across a surface without experiencing a dipping or sinking feeling at either edge.

As is fairly standard of an all-foam mattress, the Novosbed’s edge support could be better. When sitting on the edge of the bed, the mattress doesn’t quite offer the level of support needed to feel comfortable, and it is a similar situation when sleeping close to the edge. Though you won’t feel that the mattress will tip you off, you may not feel entirely safe. If you share a bed, you will probably notice the Novosbed’s edge support quality more, as you will naturally lie closer to the edge.

Casper’s edge support is a lot more promising – and it is considered one of the best all-foam mattresses for edge support. When lying near to the edge on the Casper, you won’t feel as if you might roll-off. For this reason, Casper is a particularly good option for couples or anyone who finds it more cooling to sleep at the edge of the bed.

Motion Isolation

Motion isolation rates a mattress’ ability to absorb movement, and all-foam mattresses tend to score exceptionally well in this area. Mattresses with the best motion isolation will allow a sleeper to change position, rollover or climb out of bed without their movements disturbing the other sleeper.

The Novosbed’s high-quality memory foam construction makes it great at isolating motion. If you plan to sleep on the Novosbed with a partner, you shouldn’t feel a shaking sensation when the other person switches positions.

Likewise, Casper is relatively good at isolating motion across its surface. While you may still be able to sense your sleeping partner moving in bed, it shouldn’t be bad enough to wake you up.

All-foam mattresses tend to be slightly less durable than hybrid or spring mattresses, as mattresses with springs can push back against your body while you are sleeping in a way that foam cannot. Novosbed’s mattress is one of the best all-foam mattresses available in durability, with its high-quality materials giving it an average lifespan of 6 to 7 years. When the Novosbed is nearing the end of its lifespan, you shouldn’t notice any major indentations with proper care. A way to prevent these from forming for as long as possible is to rotate the mattress every 2 to 3 months.

The Casper mattress was produced in 2014 and is advertised to have an average lifespan of 6 to 8 years. This means we haven’t been able to test how it performs right up until the end of its lifespan. Still, it is highly likely that the mattress will remain comfortable and supportive right until the end of Casper’s 10-year warranty with its solid construction. Thanks to Casper’s more supported structure with the lifted hip section, even if you experience some sinkage as the mattress is getting on in years, it is unlikely that you will notice a dip in the surface.

Again, temperature neutrality is better in a hybrid or spring mattress than an all-foam, because, with its packed foam layers, a foam mattress doesn’t have room for air circulation. But there are certain features that an all-foam mattress manufacturer can use to encourage heat dispersal. Novosbed uses a breathable Tencel-fiber cover to prevent the build-up of heat directly beneath a sleeper’s body, but hot sleepers may notice a build-up of heat over time.

Casper mattresses are made from memory foam, which is known to hold onto heat – but again, Casper uses certain design features to prevent the mattress from being too hot. Casper’s perforated foam layers allow airflow and reduce heat build-up, preventing you from feeling uncomfortably hot during sleep. Of course, being made from memory foam, the Casper mattress won’t cool you down either, but it is definitely one of the better mattresses for temperature neutrality.

Pressure Relief

Pressure relief is a measure of how capable a mattress is of redistributing pressure, preventing “pressure points,” which are known for causing pain in the shoulders, hips and back. Mattresses that offer adequate pressure relief can avoid these parts of the body from pressure build-up by “cradling” a sleeper and helping to maintain alignment. The Novosbed uses pressure-relieving foam layers that help to relieve shoulder and back pain effectively. Side sleepers, in particular, can benefit from Novosbed’s firm-yet-soft pressure relieving capabilities.

Casper also has very good pressure relieving qualities, and its all-foam design makes it best suited to lightweight and average weight sleepers. Heavier sleepers may find that the mattress sinks too much, which may put extra pressure on the hips and the shoulders. For the average sleeper, though, Casper will provide great pressure distribution and prevent the sleeper from waking up with aches and pains in the morning.

All-foam mattresses release gas when they are unboxed, and this is known as off-gassing. The odour, which is a little like a new car smell, is released from VOCs that have been packed inside the box with the mattress. VOCs are more unpleasant in smell than they are harmful.

The Novosbed’s off-gassing odour is noticeable when you first remove it from its box. But it doesn’t take long for the smell to dissipate, and, in fact, within 24 hours, you shouldn’t be able to smell anything. If you are particularly sensitive to smell, you may want to wait up to 48 hours before sleeping on the mattress.

The Casper also gives off a moderate off-gassing smell when it is first opened. This smell completely dissipates after several days. Some people have reported being able to smell a faint off-gassing odour when sleeping on the Casper for up to a week, so keep this in mind if you find the off-gassing smell unpleasant.

Warranty And Returns

It is essential to find a mattress with a good warranty and sleep trial if you are buying online. Unlike choosing a mattress in-store, you can’t test a mattress out beforehand when purchasing a bed in a box. This means you may have issues with the mattress being too firm or too soft when it arrives, and you need reassurance that you can return the mattress for a full refund if it isn’t for you. A good warranty also offers reassurance – that a mattress has a long lifespan and that you can return or replace it free of charge if it has defects.

Novosbed has a 120-night sleep trial, including the 60 night break-in period. The sleep trial’s unique feature is that you can ask for a Comfort+ memory foam topper, which can either increase or decrease your mattress’s firmness, depending on whether you feel that the mattress is too soft or too firm. Novosbed will send you this topper free of charge at any point in the sleep trial. Novosbed mattresses and optional Comfort+ kit come with a 15-year warranty.

To read the full warranty, please visit the Novosbed warranty page.

Casper’s 100-night sleep trial is shorter than Novosbed but gives you plenty of time to get used to the mattress. In this time, you will be able to return the mattress after the mandatory adjustment period if you don’t like it. It may take several weeks to adjust to either the Casper or the Novosbed mattress, especially if you have never slept on an all-foam mattress before. Casper also comes with a 10-year warranty, which is shorter than Novosbed.

FAQs Of Novosbed Vs Casper:

Q: Why aren’t the Casper and the Novosbed available in stores?

You can only buy the Casper and Novosbed online, and you won’t be able to visit a store and try out the mattresses before buying them. This helps the companies to keep their costs down and sell you their products at a better value. Because both mattresses have a sleep trial, there is no risk of buying either of them from their store online. You will be able to return the mattresses if they don’t suit your sleeping preferences.

Q: What happens if I return my Casper or Novosbed?

With Casper and Novosbed both having 100+ night sleep trials, you can return either mattress for a full refund if you decide it isn’t for you. Both companies will collect your mattress and return it for you. Both Casper and Novosbed work with local charity partners and recycling companies (depending on regional restrictions) to either donate their returned mattresses or recycle them.

Q: What bases are the most suitable option for the Casper or the Novosbed?

There are several bed bases that you can use for an all-foam mattress like the Casper or the Novosbed. If you buy a slatted frame, this is generally fine for supporting the mattress and offers extra ventilation. Just make sure that the gap between the slats is no bigger than 7 centimetres, which might not give the mattress the right level of support.

Here are some examples of some other suitable bases:

  • Slat bases
  • Box bases
  • Platform bases
  • Adjustable bases

In Summary

When comparing Casper vs Novosbed in Canada, both are incredibly popular mattress choices and deciding which one is for you may not be easy. Based on the features of both mattresses, here are some of our thoughts:

You will most likely prefer the Casper to the Novosbed if you are looking for a mattress with plenty of bounce. Both the bounce and response time of the Casper give it a unique feel. The Casper is also incredibly versatile, making it ideal for literally every type of sleeper, from combination sleepers to couples and sleepers of different body shapes and preferences. Casper’s biggest benefit is its zoned support, which is particularly useful for anyone who sleeps on their stomach or anyone who carries extra weight around their stomach or hips.

The Novosbed, though very similar to the Casper, has a traditional memory foam feel that sets it apart. Unlike the Casper, it comes in multiple firmness options, rather than coming as a one size fits all mattress. If you have more specific firmness needs, you will enjoy choosing between the Novosbed’s soft, medium and firm options. It is also a big bonus that Novosbed offers a Comfort+ kit to customize the mattress further and make it suitable for you if you feel your mattress is too soft or too firm during the sleep trial.

If you are looking for an environmentally-conscious mattress with varied firmness options, the Novosbed is for you. But if you are more interested in the bounce and response time of the foam, Casper may be your best choice.
